Turner Guilford Knight (TGK) Detention Center Kitchen Air Conditioning and Chiller/Tower Replacement Project

Existing kitchen is presently being provided with 100% ventilation air from an existing air handling unit located on the roof of the storage room which is part of the kitchen. Said unit has a hot water coil, and filters. Under this project, the ventilating air handling unit will be removed and replaced with two new air handling units. One air handling unit will provide pre-conditioned make-up air to the kitchen hoods. The second air handling unit will provide conditioned air to the entire kitchen (replacing 100% ventilation). Since there is little room in roof, the two new air handling units mentioned herein will be housed in “one” common housing (custom engineered).

Two existing centrifugal chillers sized 240 and 160 tons each were removed and replaced with two high efficiency new centrifugal chillers sized 350 tons each.

Present plant operation required the running of both existing chillers to meet building peak cooling load.  New chillers were sized in such a way that only one chiller will run during the entire year.  The other chiller will be for stand-by use only.  Two existing condenser water pumps were removed and replaced with two new ones properly sized (one pump for stand-by use only).
